Local dentistry gets early jump on collecting toys for Jacksonville Toys for Tots

Carolina Dental Specialty Center will be collecting new, unopened toys for the Jacksonville Toys for Tots starting Nov. 1 through Dec. 14 at their office located at 200 Doctors Dr.

Since 2016, Carolina Dental Specialty Center has provided its clinic as a depot for Jacksonville residents to donate unused toys to the Toys for Tots program, an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves that provides toys and gifts to less fortunate children at Christmas time.

“We participate in quite a few programs throughout the year where we give back to the community, but Toys for Tots is particularly special because it brings a lot of joy to children in our area whose families might not be able to afford many gifts during the holiday season,” said Dr. Jose Arauz, founder of Carolina Dental Specialty Center. “Every aspect of life is getting more expensive, but no kid should feel like they aren’t good enough to receive presents at Christmas.”

Community members can drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes positioned in local businesses throughout Jacksonville, including Carolina Dental Specialty Center. According to the Toys for Tots website, coordinators with Toys for Tots will pick up donations and store them in central warehouses, where the toys are sorted by age and gender.  At Christmas, coordinators, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies, distribute the toys to the community’s less fortunate children.

Jacksonville robotic dentistry wins ‘Best of the Best’ for dental implants

As the Jacksonville Daily News published their annual Best of the Best Jacksonville awards Sunday, Carolina Dental Specialty Center was awarded the top honor in the category of dental implants, further cementing the clinic as the go-to periodontist in the Jacksonville area thanks to their use of robot-assisted dental services.

The Jacksonville Daily News Best of the Best list recognizes the top businesses in an array of categories that are voted on by the general public.

Offering periodontist services in Jacksonville since 2007, Dr. Jose Arauz, founder of Carolina DSC, has been building a reputation throughout the eastern Carolinas as a tech-savvy dental savant due largely in part to his use of the Yomi robotic dental system, a state-of-the-art robotic software and mechanism that allows Arauz to perform periodontal procedures — both simple and complex — more quickly and with less discomfort than traditional methods, allowing for same-day dental implants with smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

“It’s an incredible honor to receive this award because the Jacksonville Daily News Best of the Best list is chosen by the people of our area, which shows that we are really making an impact due to the way we perform our dental implants,” said Arauz. “We look forward to serving our community and will continue to do so at the highest level of care with patient experience being our top priority.”

Arauz has been installing dental implants for patients for over 15 years, including more than 250 using the Yomi robotic dental system.

The Yomi system offers precise and accurate physical guidance through haptic robotic technology, which constrains the drill during procedures. This level of automated assistance provides Arauz with complete control and allows for clear visualization of the surgical site.

Jacksonville dentistry to hold public demonstration of rare robotic dental system helping patients heal faster

Those in the eastern Carolinas considering undergoing dental implant surgery will have the opportunity to get an up-close, hands-on demonstration of the Yomi robotic dental system, the only FDA-cleared robot-assisted dental surgery system in the country, at Kimbrell’s parking lot on Friday, Sept. 9 from 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. hosted by Carolina Dental Specialty Center (DSC), the first and only dentistry in eastern North Carolina to use Yomi.

Taking place at 1370 Western Blvd., the open-house event will allow those in attendance to see how Yomi operates and can even use the robotic dental system themselves on a synthetic dental model to better understand the precision and steadiness of the device, allowing for smaller, more accurate incisions and quicker recovery times than traditional surgeries.

Carolina DSC will be giving away a free consultation and x-ray to one lucky attendee following the event, with the winner scheduled to be determined on Sept. 23.

Additionally, those attending the live demonstration will receive a free goodie bag along with chapstick, sunglasses, frisbees, beach balls, koozies and toothbrushes.

As one of the few periodontists in the country using the state-of-the-art, robot-assisted technology, Dr. Jose Arauz, founder of Carolina DSC, has been utilizing Yomi since February of 2020 when his practice first acquired it.

“Ever since we brought Yomi into our office, we’ve had a significant technological advantage over traditional methods of dental implant surgeries,” said Arauz, who has been practicing dentistry in Jacksonville since 2007. “We’re excited to open our doors to the public so they can see for themselves just how effective our robotic dental system is when it comes to minimally invasive procedures.”

To date, Arauz has utilized the Yomi robotic system on 171 dental surgeries — including 250 dental implants installed — that allow his patients to experience less discomfort and faster recovery times compared to traditional dental implant surgeries.

The Yomi system offers precise and accurate physical guidance through haptic robotic technology, which constrains the drill during procedures. This level of automated assistance provides Arauz with complete control and allows for clear visualization of the surgical site.

Carolina DSC helps Wilmington Boys and Girls Club’s campaign raise school supplies for 2,200 NC students during annual supply drive

More than 2,200 students in Onslow and New Hanover counties will be fully supplied for their first day of school thanks to the Brigade Boys and Girls Club’s annual Stuff the Backpack Campaign, a supply drive aimed at providing K-12 students with necessary classroom materials ahead of the new school year.

The supplies will go to Brigade’s club members that attend 10 club sites across New Hanover and Onslow Counties. The supplies will then be distributed during the Brigade Summer Program, an all-day summer initiative that features field trips, activities, access to the on-site swimming pool, and an overall safe space for kids so they are not home by themselves.

Now in its 12th year, the Stuff the Backpack Campaign saw more than 20 organizations and individuals donating necessary school supplies, including notebooks, notepads, pencils, rulers, Kleenex, hand sanitizer and more.

“Brigade Boys & Girls Clubs mission provides support for those who need us the most,” said Ashlyn Williams, marketing and communications coordinator for the Brigade Boys and Girls Club. “During the back-to-school time, many of our kids struggle to be prepared. If it weren’t for the generous contributions of our community, we would not be able to provide our kids the ability to reach their educational goals. We ensure that all club members are prepared with what they need to do their best in school and beyond.”

Brigade Boys and Girls Club began it’s annual campaign in early July with the goal of raising 500 items of each category. According to Williams, they are set to meet that goal once monetary donations are spent on supplies in the coming days.

“We participate in the Stuff the Backpack campaign every year because we believe that no student should have their education hindered because they don’t have enough school supplies,” said Kayla Anderson of Carolina Dental Specialty Center in Jacksonville, which donated notebooks and loose-leaf paper. “We love this initiative because it gives us a chance to give back to our community and help kids succeed in a learning environment.”

While the Stuff the Backpack Campaign officially ended Monday, Williams says organizations and individuals still wanting to donate can do so by visiting www.BrigadeBGC.org/donate.

Jacksonville dentist warns that regular cleanings may lead to tooth loss for those with periodontal disease

Dr. Jose Arauz of Carolina Dental Specialty Center (DSC) is warning those living with periodontal disease, whether knowingly or not, that regular cleanings are not enough and could lead to further tooth decay or loss of teeth.

According to Arauz, a regular cleaning or prophylaxis removes soft plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth above and slightly below the gum line and is typically conducted two to three times a year. While prophylaxis is recommended as a preventive measure to avoid periodontal disease, those who already have periodontal diseases need what’s called “periodontal maintenance therapy,” a standard procedure recommended for those experiencing bone loss, gum “pockets” deeper than 4 millimeters, bleeding gums and exposed root surfaces.

“While both procedures may seem very similar, the truth is regular cleanings are not enough for those with periodontal disease and may lead to further tooth loss if not undergoing regular periodontal maintenance,” said Arauz, a periodontist practicing medicine for 20 years. “Periodontal maintenance includes removal of plaque and tartar from exposed portions of the teeth and above the gum line all the way to where the root, bone and gum come together. We also smooth our rough areas of the roots, monitor pocket depths, and treat inflamed or infected pockets with antiseptic medicines if necessary.”

According to Arauz, periodontal maintenance should be performed every three months or more depending on a patient’s accumulation rate of tartar and plaque, how much inflammation or infection is occurring, the severity of loose teeth and other risk factors.

Some symptoms of periodontal disease include puffy, swollen, tender or receding gums, painful chewing, loose teeth, spaces developing between teeth and bad breath.

Typically, periodontal maintenance is considered a basic service by insurance carriers rather than preventive care, and may be subject to a yearly deductible.

Jacksonville dentist adds industry-changing, pain-free approach to teeth cleaning

Carolina Dental Specialty Center, a Jacksonville periodontistry specializing in robotic dental implants, has added a new, advanced method of teeth cleaning known as Guided Biofilm Therapy to its services, saving their patients time and discomfort during routine cleaning procedures while more effectively preventing periodontal and peri-implant diseases.

In partnership with EMS Dental, the inventor and manufacturer of the Guided Biofilm Therapy procedure, the latest concept in plaque removal allows periodontists at Carolina DSC to remove layers of dental plaque from patients’ teeth and gum pockets using advanced tools and technology, including the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master.

This technology combines high-pressure airflow with a fine erythritol powder to thoroughly, safely and comfortably remove biofilm, stains and young calculus deposits on natural teeth, gum pockets, restorations, and implants, providing the least-invasive method of teeth cleaning.

“Because of its many health and cosmetic benefits, this procedure is well on its way to becoming the preferred method among dentists for cleaning teeth,” said Dr. Jose Arauz, founder of Carolina DSC. “Our patients are experiencing less discomfort and cleaner teeth thanks to GBT. And what many people don’t realize is that practicing and maintaining  good oral hygiene not only provides health benefits to your teeth and gums, but can improve overall health and wellbeing, too.”

Dental biofilm is the primary contributor to caries, periodontal and peri-implant infections, which can increase the risk of systemic diseases, including cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis or diabetes. According to Arauz, preventing the buildup of biofilm around teeth and gums can improve overall health and wellness.

Additionally, a confident smile and smiling more often helps reduce the body’s response to stress and lowers the heart rate in stressful scenarios, according to the National Institutes of Health. When those who are less confident in their teeth smile less, their body reacts less favorably to stress, causing high blood pressure and other health complications that can lead to a decrease in life longevity.

With the addition of Guided Biofilm Therapy to its repertoire of services, Carolina DSC adds to its list of medically-advanced procedures aimed at reducing discomfort and procedure time for its patients. These procedures include the enlistment of Yomi Robot-Assisted Dental Systems, the first and only robot-assisted dental surgery system to be commercially available in the country.
